How to Use Poster Tape (Removable Mounting Tape) on Walls

Poster tape (double-sided, removable mounting tape) is great for hanging posters, photos, and lightweight decor without nails or damage. Follow these steps for clean, secure results:

1. Prepare the wall & surface

Wipe the wall with a clean, dry cloth to remove dust, oil, or moisture.

Let the wall fully dry (tape won't stick well to damp surfaces).

Make sure the back of your poster/paper is clean and smooth.

2. Cut or tear the tape

Cut small pieces (about 1–2 inches / 2.5–5 cm) or tear off strips.

For a standard poster, use 4 pieces (one on each corner) + 1–2 in the center for extra hold.

3. Apply tape to the item first

Stick one side of the tape to the back corners/edges of your poster.

Press firmly for 3–5 seconds to secure.

Leave the paper liner on the other side for now.

4. Position & stick to the wall

Hold the poster where you want it.

Peel off the liner from the tape.

Press the poster firmly against the wall, holding each spot for 5–10 seconds.

Smooth the entire poster to eliminate bubbles.

5. How to remove safely (to avoid damage)

Slowly peel the poster downward and away from the wall at a low angle.

If any tape residue stays:

Rub gently with your finger to roll it off.

Or use a tiny bit of rubbing alcohol on a cloth (test first on a hidden spot to avoid fading paint).

FAQ

Q: Will poster tape damage my walls or peel paint?

A: Most removable poster tape is designed to be safe for painted walls, but it can lift paint if:

  • The paint is old, cheap, or low-quality
  • The wall is freshly painted (wait at least 30 days)
  • You peel it off too quickly or at the wrong angle

Q: Can I use poster tape on textured walls, wallpaper, or brick?
A: Generally no:

  • It won't stick well to rough/textured walls, brick, or concrete
  • It can easily tear wallpaper or leave sticky residueStick to smooth, painted drywall or smooth wood.

Q: How much weight can poster tape hold?

A: Standard poster tape is only for lightweight items:

  • Posters, photos, paper, thin cardboard
  • Usually up to 0.5–1 lb (≈225–450 g) total

Do NOT use for frames, mirrors, shelves, or heavy decor.

Q: How do I get rid of sticky residue left by poster tape?

  • Rub the residue with your finger to roll it into a ball and peel off
  • Use a small amount of rubbing alcohol on a cloth (test first on a hidden spot)
  • For delicate paint, use warm soapy water instead
